Bhutia Busty Monastery

Bhutia Busty monastery is located about 1.5 km from Chowrasta. Founded in 1879, the Monastery follows the Vajrayana School of both Kargyud and Nijingmapa order, also known as red hat sect. The origin of name ‘Darjeeling’ is linked to this monastery 'Dorjee', meaning thunderbolt in Tibetan and 'Ling' meaning resting place, thus 'Place' of the 'Thunderbolt' which was the original name of the Monastery, once located on the Observatory Hill before it was sacked by the Nepalese in the 19th century and rebuilt at the site presently occupied by Bhutia Busty Monastery. The ill-fated Monastery was once more destroyed by the 1934 earthquake. The present Bhutia Monastery owes its existence to the munificence of the Late Raja of Sikkim. Built according to traditional Tibetan Architecture with strong Sikkimese influence, the monastery is worth a visit.
